Census Do's & Don'ts

The Census is and has been under way for some time. Most of us will receive a census questionnaire in the mail. It is possible that Census personnel may contact you by phone or visit your home.

Like everything else, there are scam artists who may be trying to take advantage of this situation. Here are some key things to remember when dealing with an individual who represents themselves as a Census worker:

1. The U.S. Census will not contact you by e-mail - any emails are almost certainly fraudulent.

2. A census worker arriving at your home will have the following: badge, a handheld device, a canvas bag marked as U.S. Census and a confidentiality notice.

3. Legitimate Census workers will not ask for: SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER, BANKING INFORMATION SUCH AS ACCOUNT NUMBERS, CREDIT CARD INFORMATION, ETC.

4. Legitimate Census workers will not ask for donations nor will they ask to enter your home.

If someone who represents themselves as a U.S. Census worker raises your suspicion, contact local law enforcement or the Regional Census Center @ 214-267-6900.

We'll have more on the census soon.
