
The Louisville Elementary auditorium was packed on Friday morning (4-8-11) for the 5th grade D.A.R.E. graduation ceremony and recognition of students. The event was punctuated with loud cheers as students and classrooms were recognized for their accomplishments within the program. The DARE program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) aims to teach students about the dangers of drug use through a series of police officer led classroom lessons. However ,the D.A.R.E. program is more than just drug prevention education; it teaches students good decision making skills to help them avoid high-risk behavior to ensure they grow up healthy, safe and secure. Winston County’s DARE program is led by Louisville, police officer Tonya McWhirter who acted as Mistress of Ceremony for the event. Speakers included; Michelle Hopkins, a DARE student who brought the Welcome to the crowd, Mayor Will Hill, Police Chief L.M. Claiborne and former MSU quarterback and current Director of Player Personnel at MSU, Rocky Felker.
