PSC & FTC Go After Telemarketers

Jackson, Mississippi (February 14, 2012)- Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley announced today that the Mississippi PSC along with the Federal Trade Commission have exchanged information and are pursuing cases against what is believed to be the largest telemarketing scam in years, involving credit card service solicitations. Presley said PSC enforcement agents recently filed a case claiming multiple violations of Mississippi law against Roy Cox, Jr. of Santa Ana, California along with several U.S. based companies and some international companies owned by Cox.

The PSC’s action comes on the heels of a case filed by the Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice against Cox and his companies for similar violations of federal law. Presley said allegations against Cox and his companies involve possible violations of the Mississippi No-Call law for illegal robo-calls. If found guilty, each violation carries a fine of up to $5,000.

“So far our investigation has revealed that this is possibly the largest telemarketing scam to hit Mississippi since the auto warranty scam a few years ago.” Presley said. Presley encourages Mississippians to continue to report any and all telemarketing calls where a product or service is being offered to his office at 1-800-637-7722 or 1-800-356-6428 or online at http://www.psc.state.ms.us/
