Boy Scouts and LFD Team Up for Hydrant Coding

The City of Louisville Fire Department and the local Boy Scout Troop have teamed together to make the operations of your Fire Department more efficient and take a step further towards providing better services to the community as a whole. The Boy Scouts are painting the bonnets of fire hydrants to represent a range of gallons of water per minute available if needed to extinguish fires. This allows for a visual perspective for the Fire Department to make decisions that will allow for a more efficient operation in the event of an emergency.

This is how National Fire Protection Association color coding system is set up:

Red topped hydrants 0-499 gallons per minute

Orange topped hydrants 500-999 gallons per minute

Green topped hydrants 1000-1499 gallons per minute

Blue topped hydrants 1500 and above gallons per minute
