County Unemployment Rate Slowly Improving

The rate of unemployment in Winston County has continued to drop throughout the last quarter of 2010 as December's rate fell from 17% in November to 16.5%. However, the County continues to have one of the highest unemployment rates in the state. There were 118 new unemployment claims in the county during December.

The State's seasonally adjusted rate of unemployment was at 10.1% for the same time period. Only Clay, Tunica, Holmes and Noxubee Counties exceed the level in Winston County.The rate also showed improvement compared to the same time period of the previous year. December unemployment in 2009 was more than a percentage point higher at 17.7%.
