Louisville's Board of Aldermen met on Tuesday evening in a regularly scheduled session. The Board heard from Tonya McWhirter of the Louisville Police Department as she invited city officials to the DARE graduation on March 30 at the Louisville Elementary Auditorium. This year will see 260 graduates of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program. The featured speaker for the event is Marshall Fisher, the Director of the Ms. Bureau of Narcotics.
In more contentious proceedings, the Board recommended Mike Forster for the joint appointment with the County for the Airport Board. Forster will take the place of Mark Donald whose term expired in early February. Donald requested to remain on the Board as several other Airport Board members appeared at the meeting in support of Donald. Alderman Crosby questioned the reappointment given the county's position, "where does this leave us when we have these two Boards at odds." Alderman Caperton indicated that he had spoken with a County Supervisor and he believes that the County will not change their mind on the issue. A motion was made to reappoint Donald to the position but failed by a 2-3 vote. Board members thanked Donald for his service and expressed a hope that he might serve again in the future. At this point, a motion was made to appoint Mike Forster to the Airport Board. That motion passed on a 3-2 vote.
The Board also set an April 17th hearing date for several unclean properties including: 103 Beal Av., 801 Winston St., 508 S. Jones Ac. ans 211 Mississippi Ave. 404 Academy Street is now in compliance and was removed from the list of unclean properties.
The Board also made Landfill Trust Fund contributions totaling $9500 and transferred a zero turn mower from the Recreation Dept to the Street Dept.
Police Chief Claiborne presented the Board with recommendations for two police officer trainee positions as patrol officers. After review, the board approved Justin Moore and Julian Willis for these positions. After discussion, the Board also rejected a pay raise request for a city employee indicating that singling out employees for pay increases raised concerns about fairness for other city workers.
The Board also discussed the upcoming trip to Washington by the Economic Development Board. Mayor Will Hill had previously indicated that family matters may prevent his participation in the trip and had recommended City Attorney Taylor Tucker to attend in his absence.
The Board's next scheduled meeting is April 3rd.
