The Winston County Sheriff's Office conducted several safety checkpoints on local highways on Friday and Saturday. Several arrests were made on DUI and drug charges over the weekend but no DUI arrests were made on Friday. Sheriff Jason Pugh indicated that individuals may be using designated drivers more frequently than in the past and encouraged the public to continue to do so. This past weekend was a time of graduation which is often a time of excessive celebration. Pugh indicated that the reduction in DUI arrests at checkpoints may indicate that the public is getting the message that drinking and driving will not be tolerated.
The Department did respond to a "shots fired" call at the Shrine Club on Hwy 15S on Saturday evening. A large party was underway at the time and due to the checkpoints underway in the area, deputies were able to respond quickly to the scene. The shooter was unable to be identified and the shots were apparently not directed at any individual. Several shell casings were found at the scene.
