Mississippi's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate actually ticked up slightly in December to 8.6%. Winston County's unemployment rate sat at 11.9% for the same time period. Winston ranks 64th out of 82 counties with DeSoto and Rankin at the lowest rate of unemployment (5.9%) while Clay County has the highest unemployment rate of 18.4%.
Winston's 11.9% rate is significantly better than the 13.1% rate for December of 2011 but is however an increase from the revised November, 2012 number of 10.3%. The Ms. Department of Employment Security indicates that out of a labor force of 7500 in the county,920 are unemployed and actively seeking work.
