Mississippi's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased in February from the previous month. February unemployment statewide reached 11.4%. This is an increase from 11% in January and an increase 0f 2.3 from February 2009.
Mississippi 's unemployment is 1.7% higher than the national average. Winston County's rate is the third highest in the state at 22.1%. Rates are only higher in Noxubee ( a neighboring county) and Holmes County at 23.3 and 23.1 % respectively. By comparison, some area counties are faring much better. Unemployment in Oktibbeha County was 10.7% and 12.5% in Neshoba County for February.
Mississippi Department of Employment Security statistics indicate that 1710 out of 7740 workers in Winston County were unemployed during the month of February.
