Last week was a big one for Winston County football. The in-county rivalry between Noxapater and Nanih Waiya continued with a rowdy game that flip-flopped in the second half. Noxapater took a 13-6 lead into the home locker room at halftime. But turnovers, poor field position and penalties led to 31 second half points for Nanih Waiya. The turning point may have been a fumble recovery in the Tiger's endzone that resulted in a touchdown early in the 4th quarter that put Nanih Waiya up 24-13 and the Warriors never looked back.
Both teams came into the contest with state rankings: Noxapater ranked # 12 in Class 1A while Nanih Waiya sported a # 3 ranking. This week, Nanih Waiya stays at home and takes on Thomastown while the Tigers travel to East Oktibbeha.
The Louisville Wildcats returned to their winning ways by defeating Class 6A Columbus - 36-28. After jumping out to a 28-7 lead, the Cats had to hold on and hold back a late surge by Columbus. A strong ground game led by Davais Schaffer made the difference as the Cats only attempted 6 passes while converting 4. Even with a 2-3 record, Louisville holds a current State Ranking of 7. This week, the Cats travel to West Lauderdale.
The Patriots of Winston Academy had a much easier time at home as they rolled over Kirk Academy 40-7. Falling behind 7-6 early in the contest, the passing attack of Tyler Sullivan to receivers, Cameron Paschal, Jack Dempsey and Austin Flake took over and the Pats never looked back. This week, the Patriots head to Starkville for a major rivalry game.
