What's Happenin' This Weekend

Local folks are pumped heading into this first weekend of college football. Football does dominate everything right now. MSU fans are chattering over last night's 59-14 thumping of Memphis. The Dawg's offense looks fast & quick to strike. The main questions remain on defense as there were a few lapses but it's hard to judge as it looks like Coach Mullen played everybody but the waterboy and his 5 suspended players. MSU faces a real test next week as they travel to Auburn to take on the defending National Champions.
Ole Miss starts their season with a 3:45 kickoff at home against BYU on Saturday. These two teams have never met on the football field before and both have some question marks coming out of last year. BYU had a better record but they did play in the WAC.
We've already posted info about our local high school games as 3 of the 4 will take the field tonight. Nanih Waiya has a much needed off week after a heartbreaking loss to Kemper Co. last week. Winston Academy has their toughest test of the year so far as they head down to the Meridian area to take on Lamar. The Pats take a 2-0 record into this contest. Noxapater is looking for their first win of the season as they now must face Kemper Co. on the road. The Louisville Wildcats have something to prove as they hope to improve their 1-1 record as they head down to Neshoba Central. This game will be broadcast on WLSM radio.
Not into football? How about a little time on the water? It's Canoe Day on Saturday at the Noxubee Refuge. Canoes, life jackets and paddles will be available for use on Bluff Lake at no charge. This is a great opportunity to explore canoeing, the rookery and the cypress stands. Canoes will be launched next to the Cypress Cove Recreational Boardwalk at Doyle Arm. Canoe launching starts at 9:00 am & runs til 3 pm. For more info, call 662-323-5548.
And don't forget, there will be a book signing and maybe some food tasting at the Winston County Library as Patty Roper, editorial director for Mississippi Magazine, will be at the Winston County Library on Tuesday, September 6th from 12:00 – 2:30. Patty will be signing copies of her newest book, Easy Parties and Wedding Celebrations, and will give a special demonstration at 12:30 geared toward fall and holiday entertaining. There will also be a taste tasting of recipes from her books as well as tablescapes from her newest book. The event is free but space is limited..
Hope you all have a great weekend. Get out & support your teams and enjoy your family..
