The Social Media has Hashtagged the Egg Bowl!!

In a truly unique move, Mississippi State has integrated a Twitter hashtag into its on-the-field battle against Ole Miss for Saturday’s matchup between the two in-state rivals. While all schools prepare their home field with team logos and symbols at midfield and in each end zone, MSU has stepped away from tradition and placed a Twitter hashtag in the north end zone of Scott Field. The move has drawn national attention and in general praise from media and other schools as well.
Twitter is a social networking service that allows users to send short (140 characters) and quick text based posts across the internet. Users can attach photos, links and even video to a Twitter post. Most universities use Twitter accounts to promote sports, academics, etc with specific accounts that others can follow but not post to directly. The use of a common hash tag in each post includes that post under a single heading in Twitter. In effect, an individual’s tweet can be included with thousands of others relating to the subject defined by the hashtag . The "#" signifies a hashtag used on Twitter.
The “#HAILSTATE” hashtag will be seen not only by the 55,000 plus fans in the stands but by a national television audience as well, some of whom will, of course, follow and/or post comments on Twitter, generating a media buzz for the school. Well before Saturday’s game, media outlets such as Rivals.com (Yahoo) and even the Capital One Bowl are picking up on the endzone hashtag.
