Attorney General Jim Hood is warning Mississippi residents to be wary of a scam using the name of Bancorp South to target potential victims in the state. Locally, Sheriff Jason Pugh has received multiple complaints from residents concerning the scam..
The following is a statement from BanCorp South officials: "BancorpSouth will never ask for personal or account information by e-mail or solicit account information by phone. Should a person receive a suspicious phone call or e-mail, do NOT give out any information." Webb adds you can report or verify information regarding accounts by calling, toll free, 888-797-7711 or your nearest BancorpSouth office.
Officials say that the messages are sent through cell phone calls, texts and e-mails. The message either refer to activating a debit card or provide a phone number to call or text information concerning problems with your account. Residents are encouraged not to respond to any similar messages.
