Ten year old Winston Academy Student Dev Jaiswal is competing this week in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Dev is one of 278 spellers from the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and Department of Defense Dependents Schools in Europe; as well as the Bahamas, Canada, China, Ghana, Jamaica, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea.
Dev is sponsored by the Ms. Association of Educators as a result of his win in the state spelling bee. He is the only student from Mississippi in the national contest. Contestants range from age six to fifteen.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Dev (contestant # 133) has completed the first three preliminary rounds and could be scheduled for the semi-finals to be televised live on ESPN2 on Thursday at 9:00 am. The championship finals are scheduled for Friday at 7:00 pm and will be broadcast on ESPN.
Dev correctly spelled "idiopathic" in the second round and completed the third round of the competition by correctly spelling “Qatari”. Scores from these rounds plus the score from a written test in round one will determine which of the contestants will advance to the semi finals. 228 of the 278 contestants will advance. (Correction- only 50 contestants will advance to the semi-final round, not 228 as previously posted) To find out more go to http://www.spellingbee.com/
