UDC Finds New Use for Historical Archway Destroyed by Katrina

Marker made from Archway Damaged by Katrina
When Hurricane Katrina swept across the Ms Gulf Coast in August 2005, it did significant damage to the historical home of Jefferson Davis, the only president of the Confederacy. On the grounds of the home since 1917 was an United Daughters of the Confederacy stone Archway. The archway was damaged by a casino barge during the storm. It has taken almost seven years but parts of that structure will soon find a new purpose with the help of a Winston County resident and company.
Mississippi United Daughters of the Confederacy President and Winston County native, Frances Woodruff has selected pieces of the original UDC Archway to build a new Jefferson Davis Memorial Highway marker near Grenada, Ms. The marker will be completed and inscribed by Mississippi Granite Works at the new Louisville facility in preparation for a dedication service scheduled near Grenada on Saturday, June 16th. The marker will find a home at the intersections of Hwy 51 and Hwy 8.
