In an effort to ease the financial burden and the difficulty of simply finding school uniforms for students in the Louisville Municipal School District, the NAACP and community volunteers put the first local uniform swap program together this week. More than fifty families and donors participated by gathering clothes that students may have outgrown and exchanging them with others on Friday. The exchange will continue on Saturday morning if needed.
Volunteer Shelley Thomas indicated that participants included families from Nanih Waiya and Noxapater as well as Louisville. Participants were issued vouchers equivalent to the number of clothing items they provided at an earlier date. Volunteer Janice Hopkins stated that in spite of problems with the school's call system during the first day of collections, participation was excellent. At 2:00 pm on Friday (start time of the exchange) as many as 20 families were waiting in line to search for clothing items.
