Warden Tim Palmer informed the Winston County Supervisors in their regular meeting that the Winston - Choctaw Couny Correctional Facility was smoke free as of July 1. This policy was implemented by the Mississippi Department of Corrections. MDOC officials said the policy covers any buildings, grounds and prisons operated by the agency.
Employees and inmates were made aware of the new policy in December of 2011. Corrections Commissioner Christopher Epps said in a statement that the tobacco-free initiative would provide "a healthier atmosphere not only for our inmates, but for our staff as well."
Some concern has been expressed across the state about the policy and its enforcement. Palmer indicated that the ban could likely create an additional contraband problem at the local facility.
