Habitat For Humanity Groundbreaking

Though the ground was a bit muddy and there were a few drops of rain to be felt, nothing could dampen the spirits of those who gathered this afternoon (5-3-11) for the groundbreaking of a new Habitat for Humanity home in Louisville. Volunteers, HFH Board members, community officials and interested individuals came together for the ceremony at 419 West College Street.
Glenda Johnson provided information to the gathering about Habitat for Humanity, the fund raising efforts of the local HFH and the continued need for donations. Dean Miller of the Family Selection Committee of HFH spoke about the selection process and the local family, Dennis and Christina Hooks with their children, Caitlyn, Victoria and Cameron who were chosen as the newest partner family. Emotions were high as the Hooks family thanked those gathered and the community for their support.

Habitat for Humanity is an international, nonprofit, Christian housing ministry. Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat for Humanity is able to build affordable housing for low income families. Families who receive HFH homes must participate in their construction and must pay back a no interest loan. These funds in turn are used for construction of future HFH homes.
Funds and volunteer labor are still in short supply. Johnson indicated that while approximately $20,000 had been raised for this project, it was extimated that $60,000 would be required to complete the home. Donations of cash, new appliances and volunteer labor or construction material are needed.
