LMSD Approves 2012 Budget

On a hot and muggy Tuesday evening, despite unstable funding sources because of a poor economy, the Louisville Municipal School District approved the 2012 budget for the upcoming school year.  Citing a decline in the taxes collected on both personal property and motor vehicles, board members believe the shortfall can be made up through a combination of raising taxes and budget cuts.  Tax collections in Louisville for personal property and motor vehicles have declined by $10 M over the past 12 months.  Board Member Bobby Moody says that "the 2012 budget is stable for now. The real problem begins with the 2013 school year." <paraphrased>
In other matters taken up by the School Board, approvals were granted on 1) two student transfers, 2) the Personnel Handbook, 3) the Drug Testing Policy, 4)  professional development for the upcoming school year, and 4) 16th Section Land leases.  Postponed to a later date was the issue of leaseholders that have not responded to requests to renew their lease.
The next LMSD board meeting is set for Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at 5:30 PM.
