Back to Basics with a Modern Twist

Press Release:
The Golden Triangle has an exciting opportunity with the opening of The Mississippi Modern Homestead Center in Starkville, Mississippi. The Homestead Center is a 5000 sq foot lodge on six acres of lakefront property, with gardens, trails, and farm animals. The purpose of the the Mississippi Modern Homestead Center is to help people rediscover self-sufficiency skills and to integrate the best of past and present practices. Mississippians have a long history of practical know-how that is quickly being lost. Two generations ago most Mississippians had relatives who farmed, gardened, raised animals, preserved their own food, and crafted many of their own goods such as soap, clothes, pottery, and home goods. The goal of the Mississippi Modern Homestead Center is to restore these fading traditions but with a modern twist.

The Center offers five classrooms, including an art space, kitchen, meeting room, outdoor classroom, and child-friendly classroom. In addition, the Center can sleep up to twenty people and will be available to rent by community groups for a variety of events, meetings, and retreats.

The space is versatile and designed for many uses. The Homestead Center will be available to use for weddings, dinners, art openings, and birthday parties. Last September, it was featured on the cover of Mississippi Magazine for a farm to table event.

Throughout the year, we have a dynamic schedule of workshops, special events, and retreats planned for men, women, and homesteaders of all  ages. Come learn new skills from crocheting, to preserving food, keeping small livestock, preparing healthy meals, and homemaking herbal remedies. Learn to make bread, grow mushrooms, start your own garden, and repurpose materials for crafts.

Some upcoming events include: The Starkville Homemade Holiday Bazaar and Open House on December 15th, a Women’s Wellness Weekend Retreat January 11-13, The Seed, Plant, and Bulb Exchange February 9th, and a Family Farmstead Weekend in March. And there are over 40 workshops listed under the Workshop Tab on our website. Look for some incredible summer youth camps in the coming months. Gift certificates for the holidays are available.
